Key messages
The goal of a public awareness and outreach program is to engage community stakeholders, and provide them with information. Identify key messages relevant to your municipality or area; this message will depend on your proximity to an emerald ash borer (EAB) infestation. Key messages could include:

  • Use firewood where you buy it
  • How to identify EAB-infested trees
  • Report trees suspected to be infested with EAB
  • Ecological, aesthetic and economic benefits of trees
  • Underplanting to mitigate ash loss
  • Homeowner responsibilities
  • Treatment options
  • Incentives to treat ash
  • What to plant instead of ash
  • Upcoming events and workshops

Stakeholders
Identify stakeholders for the public awareness and outreach program. Depending on the message, you may want to target a broad group of stakeholders such as all homeowners, or a very specific ones such as firewood dealers or camper registration employees.

Messaging
The method of messaging will depend on the audience your are trying to reach, and on your budget. Collaborate with other communities to share times and costs. Some examples of messaging methods include:
