Approaches to insect surveys

There are three main approaches to selecting locations for prism traps or for branch sampling.

  1. Grid survey: distribute survey points at regular, set intervals through an area to give even survey coverage.
  2. Modified grid survey: similar to grid but select more survey points from ash-dense areas and fewer from areas with few ash trees.
  3. High-risk area survey: select areas at higher risk for emerald ash borer (EAB) infestation. Any site associated with known pathways for EAB dispersal (e.g. firewood, nursery stock) should be considered high risk. Consider areas with declining ash, campgrounds, cottage communities, nurseries, sawmills, firewood dealers, major transportation routes, and highway rest areas for the survey.
